Go to Skaket beach (northwest of Orleans). Be there approaching low tide and walk out into Cape Cod Bay. Watch the tide come in, but be careful not to be too far out as the tide comes in - it can catch you by surprise.

I'd be happy to give you some suggestions, but a few questions would help steer you in the right direction. In which area of the Cape will you be staying? What type of food do you prefer or would you want to try while on the Cape -- the point are you looking for good restaurants or good seafood restaurants or no seafood at all? What type of activities do you like -- nature related, active (biking, hiking, kayaking), or shopping and sight-seeing, and/or seeing plays or concerts. Some businesses close on Labor Day but there is still TONS of activities to do on the Cape in September and the weather is usually GREAT.

Watching pennies, eh? In that case you might prefer Rhode Island. Or Haiti.
