I would say it is as safe as meeting people in person.

Hell no. Nothing more to say really.

it depends. i have made some good friends who were looking for friends, and not hook-ups, from myspace and facebook and other networking sites. if they are just looking to be friends, and don't push meeting you right away before getting to know you, then i don't think you have any problem.

I'd say it can be safe, as long as you meet in a public place (mall, restaurant, coffee shop, etc) and make sure to bring a friend (or more than one). There are some shady characters out there and it's always best to be cautious.

It can be, but you have to be very careful. First of all, if you're under 18, I wouldn't entertain the idea at all. There are too many predators out there who sound quite legitimate over the net, but are just waiting to take advantage of young people. If you are of legal age, number one, trust your instincts. Use common sense. IM the person for a while. Find out what you can to the extent you can. If you're not feeling ill at ease and do decide to meet, make sure you do it in a public place, probably for several meetings. Go from there, slowly and carefully.

It depends on where they want to meet and under what conditions. Meeting with other friends at a public place, assuming you are and adult, is fine. If you are a minor, involve your parents and makes sure they know where you are and what you are doing. It is good to have a telephone conversation with the person first as well. if you take the proper safeguards, meeting online friends can be very fun. Over the years, I have met people from all over America and the world.
