From what I understand about human nature, is that if someone idolized such as these people were, were allowed to live out their entire lives, their word would not be taken as seriously as if they died a martyr (or just plain old died.) The world would not hold them in such high regard because they would seem more mortal.

I think they would have done a world of good as they were at the time of their deaths. I do not think it is true that their messages/contributions would been meaningless if they lived to old age (people listened when they were alive). They would have still been held in high regard people for their previous track record. Just like Ghandi or Nelson Mandela

I think they would have contributed additional good, and additional bad, (because they were humans and would have made mistakes; it is inevitable...) Their policies were not theirs alone, nor should all of the wonderful accolades be given to them alone. They were esteemed people because they were great leaders. They would have continued to lead others to great things. Their bravery and willingness to lead gave strength to others to continue on in their paths. This would have been the case in the event of them becoming old men, as well. In hindsight, of course, we have the Vietnam war, and with that conflict I wonder how their strength would have changed the outcome.
