I am surprised that adults are acting like this. Can't we all just get along?

Ignore him. Any response to him, or any other bigot, is what he, or they, want. They WANT a rise out of you. That way they know they "scored". It is hard to be bashed with stereotypes. I have gotten it for more things than I can count. Just trust me... ignore the bigot(s). I file bigots in my "lower than the chewing gum I scrape off my shoe and forget" category.

Oooh! He called me a rug muncher earlier today! :) I've chosen to take his remarks in the spirit of "All In Good Fun" (no offense to @Fun intended...)

I think that you should just ignore him. dumb people who think that you being gay is a big deal don't really know how to change their minds or they just don't want to.

Thanks for your comments, Penny and Arisztid. I'm trying to get a confirmation email so I can comment back but so far it has not been forthcoming. I will refrain from commenting in the answers though...

sometimes when a person "tries" to put you down, you should take it as a compliment. that's what i try and do. this isn't a great example, but whenever somebody tells me i "run like a girl", i say thanks because i'm a girl, i love being a girl, therefore i want to run like one. forget running like a guy. who ever said guys run better anyway? that's not the point. the point is that if you are in fact a lesbian, and he does call you a "muff diver", then you can do one of two things: 1. you can sarcastically tell him you get more action with women than he probably does, or 2. you can say, "thanks, i am in fact a muff diver, and i'm proud of it." then let that be the end of it. don't let some stupid asshole bring you down because he has issues.

Call him a redneck and invite him out of the 1950's!

Report the derogatory homophobic comments, and treat said 'bagger with a good round of ignore.

Often homophobes are gay themselves. Let him bash you-my theory is that he is jealous of your strength in being able to live outside the closet that he in still in!
