A true Christian follows the Christ and the Bible. Many, many times did Jesus begin a statement with the words, “It is written”. The term “Christian” does indeed originate in the Holy Scriptures. We see that in Acts chapter 11 vs 22 – 26 22 “The account about them got to the ears of the congregation that was in Jerusalem, and they sent out Bar´na•bas as far as Antioch. When he arrived and saw the undeserved kindness of God, he rejoiced and began to encourage them all to continue in the Lord with hearty purpose; for he was a good man and full of holy spirit and of faith. And a considerable crowd was added to the Lord. So he went off to Tarsus to make a thorough search for Saul and, after he found him, he brought him to Antioch. It thus came about that for a whole year they gathered together with them in the congregation and taught quite a crowd, and it was first in Antioch that the disciples were by divine providence called Christians.” NWT What God the Father and His son, Christ Jesus want us to do is contained in the Bible. Like Jesus said at John 15:14 " YOU are my friends if YOU do what I am commanding YOU".

There are many Christians who only follow the New Testament and ignore the Old Testament completely. Often, Jesus' quotes are printed in red, indicating those are the only important words. Everything else is just there to place those words in context.

The Bible is God's Word. Christ is God's Son. You can call me whatever you want; I know what I believe.

The Bible contains several parts (depending upon your religious denomination) and is followed by Christians and nob-Christians (Jews: the Tora). The new testament Gospel was written by the disciples of Jesus based upon what they witnessed of the life of Jesus. In this was, Christians follow Jesus and the Bible. There is no difference.

Odd question since the generally accepted reports of Christ's "sayings" are recorded in the Bible, how could you do one without the other? Especially since all most everything He said, as it is recorded, can be found, if you want to seperate the two Testaments, in the Old Testament in one form or another. Good question in that if you want to be a follower of His and you find yourself acting on something recorded in the Bible that doesn't agree with what He plainly said, then you have probably misinterpreted its meaning and are surely out of step with His directives.

The Bible is Christ's Word which He has given to man His creation. So all of it is His Word and teaching really. I hope that this is helpful. -In the service of the Master. Thank you and God bless you!

It’s a very good point and it might bring about unity if it were followed. After all if you were present with Christ and accepted him you would not give priority to anyone else’s opinion above that of Jesus, would you? However, I don’t think it is likely that Christian churches with their vested interests would encourage your idea. There are some fundamental doctrines adopted by the Churches, which Christ the “son of man”, as he preferred to call himself, NEVER said or taught, for example, trinity or that he was God. Conversely, there are certain things that Jesus DID practice and teach that the Churches have left out and are not likely to adopt, for example, the worship of a single God, not two or three “persons”, and strict observance of the Law.

Follow Christ with the NEW and Learn from the Old.. Christ started in Genesis . as the SEED...HE ends in Revelations... HE fulfilled the prophecies of HIM in the OLD Testament...HE will fulfill Revelations. If you ignore the OLD, you cannot put together the whole puzzle.... The Alpha and the Omega...

Considering we have no documented evidence of Christ's work other than the Bible... this question makes no sense. What would be the reasoning behind ignoring EVERYTHING in the Bible EXCEPT the parts where Jesus is talking? Oh, and by the way, "Christian" was originally a derogatory term coined by the Romans. Just an FYI.

You really can't go by that because Christ did not write any of the bible. His apostles wrote of him. Why go by what some of the apostles' writings and not all? If God trusted them to write the Gospels, why would he not trust the to write the rest the the books of the new testament?
-
Maybe. It would certainly make more sense than taking statements like David being asked to bring the king one hundred foreskins and managing two hundred instead seriously.

Paul, Hebrews 5:11,12,13, 14.. There is much more I would like to say to you along these lines, but you don't seem to listen,(he was trying to show the likeness of Christ to Melchizedek and how God chose both) so it is hard to make you undertand. You have been Christians a long time now, and you ought to be teaching others, but instead you have dropped back to the place where you need someone to teach you all over again the very first principle in God's Word. You are like babies who candrink only milk, not old enough for solid food. And when a person is still living on milk it shows he is not very far along in the Christian life, and doesn't know much about the difference in RIGHT and WRONG. He is still a baby-Christian! You will never be able to eat solid spiritual food and understand the "deeper" things of God's Word until you become better Christians and learn right from wrong by practicing doing right.... we have to keep studying and reading to grow into mature Christain children and understand the entirety of God's Word...even 80 yr old preachers will tell you they still learn!!...it is real important....

I did but would not post, read Hebrews 5:11-14...we need all the Word ..to constantly be growing, maturing and understanding...

You are right on the mark. A real Christian would put the words of Christ at the top... but unfortunatley someone came along with a gospel that the people liked more than the orignal one. Paul said "Christ died for our sins." The only problem was that Paul/Saul was the one who terrorized the first real Christians (Acts 7:56 to 8:3) So what to do? Just say the Bible is the "Word of God" and that Jesus is talking through Paul and with that kind of logic, they got the gospel they wanted. See how it works? If not, this will explain the whole thing: http://gospelenigma.com

The word "Christian" comes from the Greek term for those who were following Christ to become like him (it literally means "little Christ"). So, of course, Christians should follow Christ. But how else do we know what Christ is like except from the Bible? Furthermore, Christ Himself taught us that ALL of the Scriptures (at that time just the Old Testament) were about Him, that every "jot and tittle" on every page was about the Son of Man, the King-Messiah, the Bridegroom of Israel. So your question is a loaded question that presupposes a dichotomy that does not exist, and denies the unity of the words of Scripture and The Word Made Flesh that Christ clearly taught.

Jack Wallace is absolutely correct.

For that matter a new big question arises : How authentic were the Gospels since Mathew,Mark,Luke&John, none of them ever met or even saw Jesus and only wrote to the best of their knowledge??? If You Follow Bible, u in a way Worship Jesus as God, if u Follow Jesus, u worship God in His purest form.

Jesus Christ was not a Christian. He definitely was an example of Christian beliefs, i.e., Chrstians are followers of Christ (self proclaimed). Jesus Christ was also an example of all the major belief systems, Hindu, Buddist, Zoroastrianism, Jewish (yes, Jewish too). Anyone who worships GOD truly and tries to love all and serve all above one's own desires is truly a follower of Jesus' teachings. Mohammed was a prophet, but he was way up there on the divine scale of behavior.

See the word "Christian" is what the world gave followers of the King. The King never called us "Christian" He does however call us sons, ambassadors, kings and priests... We are citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven. Heaven itself is NOT our home. That's why in Revelation He mentions making a new heaven and new earth. "Christians" is a derogatory word that many believers except. You can be a gay Christian, muslim, a smoker, one who has premarital sex, etc.... The term is loosely used and I don't want to associate myself with it. Now an ambassador of any country always states what his or her government says and not his or her own opinions. So with Heaven as my government and Jesus as King I speak what the constituion says (Bible) ONLY! Therefore I am a Kingdom Citizen!! NOT A CHRISTIAN!!!!

Well there was a movement a few years ago called the "Jesus Only" movement that ONLY accepted the words of Christ in the Bible as inspired and rejected everything else. And they ended up as a Mind Control Cult that got merged into another Mind Control Cult ("Oneness Pentecostalism") And they were only the latest incarnation of such groups in Church History. So, based on the bad fruit of those who have walked this path, I would think that the rest of the Bible is just as important as the words in red. Jesus does say in Matthew 5:17-18 that He did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. He came to accomplish their purpose. He goes on to say that "not even the smallest detail of God's law will disappear until its purpose is achieved." This is my understanding of the Old Testament: The ancient ceremonial law followed by the Israelites in the Old Testament (such as animal sacrifices) pointed to Jesus Christ himself, so they were not necessary after Jesus' death and resurrection. The principles of these (to worship God) still apply. The civil law was given to Israel by God so they would have a model for their society. We cannot follow those exact laws strictly today because of our own modern laws. But you will find that we are still guided by the principles behind these ancient laws. But the moral law laid down in the Old Testament or other direct commands of God require strict obedience and will never change.

Hmm...I had never thought of that before, but, yes, you are right. Since Christians are called Christians NOT Biblians, they should just follow the teachings of Christ and ignore the rest of the Bible since it's so long and confusing!

That word actually means "little Christ"
