During general anaesthetic, are you in a consciousness beyond deep sleep, or is it just deep sleep?

In general anesthesia there are a particular stage that you want your patient to achieve before you can further go on to surgery... and it is the stage 3, the surgical anesthesia stage, plane 2 level of consciousness wherein the person has no blink reflexes,pupils become fixed and respiration is still regular with good use of the chest muscles and diaphragm. Obviously you are in a deep sleep at this time...beyond that wld be hazardous.
