  • Record of the Year is awarded for a single. This award goes to the artist and the producer, engineers, etc. for that song. Album of the Year is awarded for a whole album, and the award is presented to the artist, producer, and engineer for that album. So, according to the Grammy people, "record" means one song and "album" means the whole collection of songs on a CD or LP. In case you were wondering, "Record of the Year" is different from "Song of the Year" in that "ROTY" is given to performer, et. al., while "SOTY" is presented to the songwriter/composer of a given song.
