  • the updates that your computer is downloading are critical security updates for Windows and other Microsoft products that you have installed on your computer. You may not feel like you need them, but your computer usually does. If you really want to turn off the automatic updates (which I don't really recommend, since you can leave yourself open to malicious attacks and system crashes) then right click on the "my computer" icon (either on the desktop or in windows explorer) and select the "automatic updates" tab. From there you can configure how your system handles automatic updates. I recommend setting it to download automatically but to notify you before installing.
  • You can also shut down the automatic update service at any point, including when it's nagging about rebooting, by going into command prompt and issuing the command: net stop wuauserv Doing so will terminate any download/installation in progress, and will also stop the highly annoying "You need to reboot your system now" bubbles that keep popping up whenever you've installed something.
