Usually it takes about a month of continious use of any antidepressant for it to become effective. After that if you are still feeling down and suicidal, talk to your doctor and s/he can switch you to another kind of antidepressant. Many people switch medications numerous times before they find one that works for them, so hang in there it may take a while but it will be worth it in the end.

It is never normal to contemplate suicide, no matter what medication you are taking. You could take the most powerful anti- depressants in the world and turn yourself into a brainless wonder who does not think about suicide, but thats hardly a cure is it? Although anti- depressants can be a very useful tool in fighting depression, they also combat your minds ability to think straight, and can, sometimes, be counter productive in dealing with the root cause of your depression. I believe the only way to fight the suicidal thoughts is to get to the root cause of them, by seeing a psychologist. I used to be suicidal myself, and in my experience a combination of anti- depressants and sessions with a psychologist were what cured me. Im not saying that anti- depressants do not work, but that in themselves they will not get to the root of the problem, so please see a psychologist as well, the combination of the two should help. Hope this helps, and get better, life is never as bad as you think. Chris, Glasgow.

yes it is..i think it is very ironic but, a side affect of anti-depression medicine is increased thoughts of suicide..which is very strange..you should contact your doctor about this problem..i hope everything works out for you..

Maybe your Doctor needs to change your medication. Go as soon as possible and tell him/her everything you are feeling. In my case I had to quit Zoloft because it took my sexuality away. My Psychiatrist switched to Wellbutrin XL and everything has been OK. I never had suicidal tendencies, but I suffered a long period of panic disorders and panic attacks, caused by working too hard with little rest for a long period. Please, go and get medical attention as soon as possible. Good Luck.

Let's say it is not the desired affect of taking an anti-depressant! And some of them are being studied now for possibly causing suicidal thoughts in some people. See below: "American psychiatric authorities emphasize that antidepressants help a great many teens and adults, and say that there is no proven link between drugs like Zoloft -- known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors -- and suicide. BUT the US Food and Drug Administration is examining the possible connection, amid much media attention, and is expected to come to a finding by this fall. The agency also issued a warning in March that patients taking antidepressants could turn suicidal and should be closely watched. Britain, citing the suicide risk, has banned all the SSRIs for youngsters, except Prozac." http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=Zoloft+Side+Effects&FORM=QSRE I would not stop taking it but call your doctor who prescribed it ASAP and get on another medication. It is NOT common, but also can be dangerous obviously. So please call your doctor Monday and tell him/her what is going on with you!

The zoloft may actually be contributing to these thoughts. Especially if you are a teenager, or have Borderline personality disorder. I do not know why you are taking zoloft, but get a second opinion to make sure you were not misdiagnosed, and to see if there is another drug that would be better for you.
