  • How long did it take Noah to Build the ark? About 100 years. When Noah is first mentioned in Genesis 5:32, he was 500 years old. Noah entered the ark in the 600th year of his life, on the 17th day of the 2nd month (Genesis 7:11-13) Keep in mind that the circumference around the earth is only 24,900 miles. Now assuming that our speedy sloth started out traveling for 8 hours a day (you know taking a long lunch, sleeping at night, taking his time so to speak) Travling at 0.15 miles an hour for 8 hours a day means that they would cover a whopping 1.2 miles per day. Assuming they kept up this brisk pace for 6 days a week (Making certain to keep the Sabbath and resting on the Sabbath) then each week they would travel 7.2 miles. That means that over the course of a year they would travel 374.4 miles. In ten years they would travel 3744 miles in 100 years (By the the time Noah drive the last nail into place and was loading up everybody) that sloth would have traveled 37,440 miles. To go completely around the earth you would have to travel 24,900 miles - that means our sloth buddies could have gone completely around the world and then some in the time it took Noah to build the ark. (1.07 times) Plenty of time, taking it slowly, taking a day off a week and the sloth's could have made it in time.
  • I'll take this as a serious question. Both internal (Biblical) and external (scientific) evidence point to a pre-flood earth much different than ours today. Apparently, the continents were larger, the oceans smaller and shallower and the climate more universally even, likely tropical or sub-tropical. Sloths may have easily lived in the vicinity of the ark. The fact that they are in South America now, doesn't mean that they were only there then. Many varieties don't live near modern Turkey, where we think the ark was. In other words, they didn't need to travel far to get TO the ark, what they needed was time to spread out FROM the ark. Since the Flood occurred about 44 centuries ago, they have had plenty of time to fill the earth, just as man has. Let's consider, too, that according to the Bible, this was a divine project. Mr. and Mrs. Sloth may have had a little help. Perhaps they hitched a ride on a passing camel. I don't know; here i'm just thinking out loud. The point is that we don't serve ourselves by being too hasty in ruling out possibilities. Most preconceived notions are disposable.
  • I believe it was a story more than a reality. If it did happen, scientists say it happened in a small area of a few hundred square miles and Noah would have only taken the animals that were indigenous to the local area only.
  • I think that the South American Sloth was delivered to Noah by a pair of swallows... That is European swallows, that is. African swallows are non-migratory.
