The reason why I think metal is getting more popular is because people want to listen to harder stuff, and metal is the way to go.

Because punk and its spirit is all about being anti-mainstream and underground, so whenever a punk band gets some sort of mainstream success and develops a large fanbase they tend to be re-classified as pop-punk or some offshoot like that, and not treated as proper punk any more. So in a way punk followers and some of the bands almost preclude themselves from becoming popular because they feel it is against their ethos. To some, signing to a major record label is as unthinkable as paedophilia, whereas this is not the case with most other forms of music, including metal. Of course, if by "punk" you mean bands like Green Day and their ilk then all of the above doesn't really apply... however it would then be pretty much a redundant question anyway because bands like that are more than a match for most metal bands in the popularity stakes.
