  • Yes, I was in the US Navy. I didn't like it because I hate slavery. I was a masochist....I wanted to hurt myself. I was almost 100% incompatible with everything there. I joined because I got out of College with a Degree in History, and there was nothing else to do in my hometown and I didn't want to become a lazy unemployed bum. I had a College Degree, but I couldn't talk to the Officer Recruiter because he didn't speak any Spanish and I didn't speak any English. I went from College to cleaning toilets, sweeping floors and swabbing. That was my basic job for a long time...
  • What I liked about it was that as long as I did what was expected, there were few surprises/stressors in life. What I did not like about it was the 'politics' - if you wanted to get ahead you had to conform to what a lot of asshat's stupid requirements...
  • I am currently in my 33rd year in the Canadian Navy and am serving as a Chief in MARPAC HQ. I have served all over the world and would recommend the Navy for anyone who can handle the regimented lifestyle. As for what we here in Canada call the "Kipper" Navy (RN), I would recommend going officer rather than as an "other rank". The one chance I had to serve on a RN ship (HMS London) showed me that the Royal Navy is not as respectful to it's Non-Commissioned members as the Canadian Navy is to it's Non-Coms. As for myself, I've done more and had much more fun as a "lower-decker" in the CN then I ever could have as an Officer and am glad I chose the way I did back in '76. Hope this helps.
  • I was in the Army National Guard for seven years with a one year deployment to Iraq. I enjoyed it very much. I matured in many ways, gained confidence and experience. I joined because Had a desire to serve my country and people. I felt that others had done so prior to me and that I owed it to them to carry the torch and do the same. I also did it as an example to my daughters that there are bigger things than just one's self.
