  • Depends on the format and on the encoder. Generally, if you're not using VBR, 196 kbit/s should be okay for MP3 files, while 128 kbit/s should be okay for more advanced formats like AAC. Personally, I can't hear the difference between an 128 kbit/s AAC encoded with iTunes, an 196 kbit/s MP3 encoded with iTunes and an unencoded CD, but if you've got better ears and a better audio system than I do, you might be able to hear a difference and thus you might want to try higher bit rates. Please note that most cheaper MP3 players are not very well made and have pretty poor headphones, so using high-quality files is useless, because these players are going to sound poor no matter what.
  • Most people are happy with a bitrate between 128kbit and 192kbit. The battery life and disk space quotes the manufacturers gave you were probably based around the former Just make sure you use a modern encoder like iTunes or LAME as opposed to an early generation one like Blade or Xing, which are not nearly as efficient with their compression algorithms
