So you can get points for asking questions and you can get points for answering questions so... is that it? I mean can you lose points? Please excuse my ignorance but I'm not sure I understand the whole concept of the points system. Can you cash them in?

You can't lose them. You can get and give negative points for bad questions and answers, but they don't take away from your points total, they only decrease your average percentages in your profile.

You cannot lose points, even when someone down-rates you. I think the point of the points is just so there is some way to measure the helpfulness of a persons contributions. In reality, though, there is no real point to the points, as you can be very helpful and not receive any (you may know this by someone leaving you a comment but not rating you), or you may be down-rated out of spite or another reason. I would take the levels and points with a grain of salt. Welcome to Answerbag :)
