Reasons for annulments vary depending on whether you are having a legal annulment or a religious one, but generally they are approved if one partner is already married, the marriage was forced, or if the partners are closely related (ex. brother and sister). An annulment is different that a divorce which is what happens when a valid marriage is broken. In other words, a divorce is like breaking a contract, whereas an anullment is like saying the contract was not legally binding in the first place.
