It says that the author of John believed the Word of Yahweh was a cognizant personality present with Yahweh from the beginning (which also means that the author of John believes there was a beginning), and was sent to Earth as a human. This human is the light that gives believers the right to become Yahweh's children. Before this human came to the Earth, Yahweh sent a man named John to announce this person's coming. For some reason, the author seems to assume that the world should have recognized this person, because the author laments that the world failed to recognize this person. From later verses, we can infer that the author is referring to Jesus as this person - the personified Word of Yahweh.
