  • Proof it and then EDIT, EDIT, EDIT, EDIT, EDIT it. Next you have a couple of choices. You can look for an Editor, to go over it one last time before seeking a publisher, or go balls to the walls and start looking for THE RIGHT publisher or agent, who will then look for the right publisher for you. Keep in mind, NEVER pay an agent a "signing on" FEE! ONLY pay your agent's commission when publishing advances or royalties are received by you! (In some cases the check may go through the agent who takes his/her cut and then sends the rest to you...but NO advance Sign On fees should be paid by you to the agent!!!) You can also go it alone...but DO NOT bother to send your book without: 1. sending it to the RIGHT publisher. (you do not send a Romance novel to a SiFi publisher, nor do you send SiFi to a technical or historic publisher...it will not be read and YOU will be discussed as someone too dumb to be aware that this rule exists!) 2. Find out who, specifically to contact, and send a Query Letter first, find out if they are ACCEPTING NEW material at this time, find out the SPECIFIC format in which your manuscript must be IN to be submitted. Find out if they only want so many chapters to start, or if they want the whole thing. Typically, it should be in plain font (Ariel, or similar style) with 1.5 inch margins all the way around it. It must be double spaced..BUT NOT extra spacing between the paragraphs...USE INDENT between paragraphs. 3. Include a brief summery of the story with your Query letter. 4. DO NOT SEND THE STORY UNLESS THEY REQUEST THAT YOU DO...its a waste of paper and paper costs you money. 5. DO put your story on a disk, so that you have a permanent copy of the original...remember your computer could crash and then you will be bald after pulling out all of your hair. 6. Be sure you send it EXACTLY in the form and type of packaging they ask you to. IF they want you to send your story or part of it in, take your DISK to Kinko's or some other place and have them print it up for you...it costs, but will probably be better quality and save you money in INK COSTS in the long run. REMEMBER you don't have kiss ass, but you DO need to be as polite and professional as you can. Publishers DO NOT NEED YOU OR ME...there are MANY OF US out there. WE need THEM! Be as patient as you can be, until you are established as a proven writer who sells...it can take 2 to 5 years for a NEW author to get picked up. IF they like some parts but suggest rewrites on others...DO IT if you want to be published...take advice with a big thank you on your lips. They will NOT waste their time, so if they have something to say to improve your book...consider long and hard before you get an attitude or "hurt feelings" and go all stubborn and uppity on your POTENTIAL publisher! If they are willing to offer some suggestions...they just may believe you have written something of value = $$ Go for it!
