I agree that they should know the language of the United States, it sucks that I can't get alot of jobs because I am not bilingual and alot of kobs want you to be... But they should be allowed to listen to and watch whatever they want, this is after all a free country, and who are we to tell them you can only watch english t.v. and only listen to english radio.

Im in England, and I agree. If you go to live in a country, ANY country then you should learn and use the language. If I were to move to Spain for example, the first thing I would do is learn Spanish.
-
I don't. Whatever happened to the "It's a Free Country" motto?

I think learning English will only help immigrants to succeed; but, I don't think it should be required by law. I also don't think putting things like signs or directions in other languages helps with encouraging people to learn English. I especially don't think government forms or applications should be in anything other than English. That just perpetuates ignorance in non English speaking people. But, English is not the official language of the US. There is not official language here.

I think they should listen to anything they want as long as they don't expect anything special because they can't speak English.
-
he'd know all about trying to learn english.

If I moved to another area that spoke a different language, I would try and learn the new language for my own benefit.

Duplicate, sorry.

I don't agree, no. Yes, if you move to a country you should make the effort to learn the language, but watching TV, listening to the radio, reading books or newspapers or speaking in your native tongue in your own personal time in no way stops you learning a new language, so I don't see why it matters.

I don't have a problem for them listening to their tv or the radio stations..what I do have a problem with is when you go have your nails done and they speak only in spanish to their co-workers. I find that very offensive and disrepected to the customers.

I think it's a terrible invasion of privacy and personal freedom to tell someone what language they should read or listen to. Tne reasoning is flawed. It won't force people to learn English if they still haven't. They will just not read or listen but will still talk to others in their native tongue. And you could not stop people from speaking how they will on their homes. In fact, how could you stop TV and Radio waves from crossing the border and literature not coming into the state. It's silly and unenforceable. If people don't see or feel the need to learn English, that is their loss and a personal decision. My parents and I came from another country, from Europe and we did all learn the language but it was our decision and bot done under coercion.
