It means it is likely not in stock yet, so you can order and pay for it now, and they will send it when they get it in.

i means that you put your name on a list before it comes out. that way, when it does come out, you have one reserved for you.

I usually pre-order XBOX 360 games, you put down 5 bucks before it comes out, and then they use that number of pre-orders to determine how many copies to ship to a certain store, depending on popularity, and then when you pick it up, that money goes towards the final price. You usually get some little trinket or demo disc for your trouble.
