This depends on the focal length of the lens fitted to the camera and the distance between the lens elements and the film plane. The further the lens elements move away from the focal plane, the higher the reproduction ratio and the closer the focusing distance. The minimum focusing distance for a given image size increases as the focal length of the lens increases. Longer lenses, however, have a shallower depth of field, which may not be desirable in some circumstances. A macro lens designed for use with a 35mm camera may have a focusing distance of well under a foot. My Micro-Nikkor 60/2.8, for example, will focus down to about eight inches. The focusing distance may be as little as an inch when using bellows or extension tubes.
