I admire cougars but wouldn't want to meet one on a hiking trail. My son the biologist said they're the biggest of the "small cats" category - which doesn't mean they're small! The small cats purr and can retract their claws, whereas the big cats (tigers, lions) don't do either. I got to pet a cougar once in a zoo. Her name was Judy. One of my kids asked the zoo guy, "Is she fierce?" and he said, "Oh, she's terrible fierce," and he skritched her head and she began to purr a great big purr. She was an elderly zoo kitty - you'd NEVER approach a cougar in the wild.
