  • That is a very interesting question. I have found the variant spellings: Marowelly and Marowelli, but no one seems to be back before the late 1800s in the Michigan area. There are mentions of a family of that name in Wisconsin www.usgennet.org/usa/wi/county/clark/clark/data/1/bbs6/6707.htm I think it may be linked to an italian surname Maroelli, or Marouelli. The only way you would find out, though, is to go backwards, carefully documenting each generation until you find your immigrant ancestor.
  • many thanks for your response. It is the name of my great-grandfather and great-uncle. They came to the US in 1884 and their naturalization papers state that they came from Germany. I can't find this surname anywhere in that area of Europe. We've been told that the name may be Scottish. I was wondering if anyone had heard of this name and its derivation. PS. regarding the name existing in Wisconsin, that's my great-grandfather. Any reference to Marowally on search engines leads only to our family members. We have NEVER heard of this surname outside of our family.
  • Marowelli is Italian but will show as German also. My great grandfather Christian, who was born in Italy but moved to Germany. I believe the earliest census I find says he was born in Sardinia. He came to the states in 1864. I follow him coming to Frankfurt Michigan, and I trace that he had a sister. He married my Grandmother Mary, who was of German ancestry. They had Josephine, who died as a child, Christian, William. Mary, Martha, Edward and a couple others who I can't recall without looking it up. They settled in Hudson, Michigan area which is where I am from. If you are interested, I can give more info. I researched the 1870-1880-1890-1910 and 1920 census' to track the family history, as well as what my Grandfather told me.
