Our HOA has served us with papers to get money they think we owe. We had attempted to contact the HOA and their attorney with no return call. How can we fight this to avoid the extra court and attorney fees?

You might try taking them to small claims court, if the amount is within that range - usually $5000 or under. Once the association is served, the normal proceedure is a dispute resolution,to settle before court. If no resolution, in my experience as a business owner - the court often sides with the consumer or dismisses the case.
