  • The rubber plant is a very easy plant to look after. It can grow large and loose leaves at the base of the plant but can be cut back over the winter when the rubber sap will not fill up the pot Site: Bright indirect light to bright shade, will take a small amount of direct sun. Temp: Average warmth. Water: Quite regularly in the growing season but leave to dry out slightly first. Rarely over the winter months. Benefits from occasional misting. Feeding: A liquid feed every month or so. Tip: Prune to shape in the winter if required
  • Rubber Trees (Ficus Elastica) Here are a few suggestions to try: Lighting: Rubber Tree's love & prefer bright light but are adaptable to low light situations as long as they are not a new plant. I would suggest moving your rubber tree to a south or east window, (the plant grows best with the morning light from the east) either exposure will allow the necessary light it requires to grow into a robust tree. If you do not have a south or east window, I would suggest getting a grow light for the rubber tree. If the plant does not have enough light it may cause the tree to lose leaves. Temperature: Rubber Tree's ideal temperatures are 75 to 80 degree's during the day & 60 to 65 degree's at night. During the winter, try to avoid drafts or dry air blowing directly onto the plant. Also avoid a/c blowing directly onto plant, all of these avoidable conditions may cause leaf lose. Watering: Water your plant thoroughly, but let the soil dry between waterings. Do not let your rubber tree pot sit in water, if there is water left in the reservoir under the pot - drain it, this will avoid yellowing of the leaves & leaf lose caused by to much water. The soil mixture for your plant should be a well draining houseplant mixture. On the norm, rubber trees prefer humid conditions, but can tolerate the dry air common in homes. Fertilize: Fertilize your plant with a water-soluble houseplant fertilizer (miracle grow or any other brand) during active growth, generally fertilizing about once per month. Pruning & Repotting: If you decide to prune your tree, do so in the spring. Repotting should be done in late winter or early spring. Rubber trees may grow tall and lanky indoors, 6-10 feet tall. You may want to support them with a stake. Maintenance or care: Wash your rubber tree's leaves if they become dusty, this will allow the plant to remain attrative and will help keep your plant healthy. Insect infestation: Mealybugs (look like cottony-covered bugs) may infest your rubber plant, if so use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to touch the surface of each little bug, this will dry them up (mealybugs have a waxy covering, so be sure to thoroughly wet). However, you will also need to treat for the tiny mealybug eggs so get an insecticidal soap from a nursery or home center store that sells houseplants, (make sure to read the entire label on the bottle before purchasing). These soap sprays come pre-mixed in trigger spray bottles, that will safely spray all the surfaces of the plant. You will have to do this more than once to ensure you have gotten rid of the infestation.
