  • It could be the "picture-in-a-picture" (PIP) feature turning on. Does it happen when you are holding the remote? Perhaps you are pressing the PIP button without knowing it, or it may be getting pressed some other way. Also, if you are not using the original remote, but a generic replacement, the TV may interpret some signals as the PIP turn on.
  • It could also be due to Closed Captioning...I've accidentally hit the caption button on my television remote and have a black square appear in the middle of the display.
  • I was actually shopping around for a new tv. I didn't want to spend to have it fixed, as it didn't seem worth it. I TRIED THE CLOSED CAPTION BUTTON AFTER READING THIS SECTION AND YEAH! IT WORKED! THANK YOU!
  • Sounds like you activated the closed captioning text mode. That happened to me before.
