Like other houses nearby it but build a bit stronger and / or higher up/ more favorable location etc. Some of the first castles were meant to protect the local people in case of storms, floods, disasters, attacks etc. they were meant as shelters/protections/fortifications. Eventually they became more and more elaborate and became more of a status symbol to have your own as some people started to become more powerfull, influential and richer than most other people. Castles then became home to people who needed the protection more than everyone else around (or who at least felt like they did) and the shelters became the full blown castles you might think of, but they started as a "place of protection". If you think about it, in a way the White House is a castle too, you don't need it to be old or for a royal family to live in it, all depends on what you define a castle to be..
