  • It seems no one can agree on where this word was actually derived from. The one thing people do seem to agree on though is that the much repeated acronym "Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden" is merely an old wives tale, though it has a lot of truth as do so many old wives tales! There's a reason people keep repeating them! As for the actual orign/meaning of the word "golf" some say it's Scottish, with words like goff. Some say it's from the early European languages with words like "kolf" & "chole" meaning club. Others see a connection to the Dutch words "kloven" "kolf" which are the plural & singular words for a Dutch game played with large curved bats & a ball, possibly a close relative to golf. Take your choice! My thought is that this is most likely a topic that those people out there who enjoy studying the origins of words etymologists)will continue to debate!
