Visa was started by Bank of America, back in the 70's when the bank was only in the San Francisco Area. Eventually Visa was spun off into it's own company as agreements were made with different financial entities. Master Charge also started at about the same time, but I'm not sure what, if any, bank it was sponsored by. The Master Card company just went public in the last year and the stock has more than doubled already. What made these two different from existing cards was that they were "credit" cards as opposed to "charge" cards, meaning that you didn't have to pay off the full balance every month.
