free? the best I have used is Bearshare. I had Kazaa for a while, but it wouldn't let me turn sharing off. Bearshare will still slow your computer down, but it has the most results, and downloads pretty quickly. You can also turn sharing off.

Limewire isn't bad, and isn't just for music. It does have quite a few junk results, though, but they're obvious. Dunno how they compare to other programs, though.

Shareaza. It accepts 4 different networks, and d/l from them all.

Bittorrent. I already answered the same question somewhere, search for it for more info. Or just google bittorrent to find a guide on how it works.

LimeWire.

I use Limewire if I'm only looking for a particular song but for an album I use bittorrent

I use limewire. The download time will depend on how many people are connected at the time and have that song and what kind of connection you are on.

Limewire is the best for free music. It downloads pretty fast, but it depends on how long the song is. You can use iTunes too, but I doubt you want to pay for your music.

360 pro is my fav. I can turn share off and it wont slow down my computer. download times depend on your connection speed. With all file share programs you have to be careful! there are viruses and if you have kids who use it, porno can come labeled as a kids favorite cartoon!

There are quite a few and i have tried all the ones listed so far. My recommendation if you have security setup and know how to run a clean computer would be emule. It is fairly simple to get running and will work with your firewalls, router port forwarding is easy to setup. Sharaza was nice but has a problem with NAT routers. Maybe limewire I tried it once and did not like the setup it used as well as the added junk I had to clean off my computer.
