Why did the band choose to distort Robert Plant's vocals in "Stairway to Heaven"?

Please define "distort", because the version I know (on "Remasters") doesn't have distorted vocals. Plant's a natural squeeler though. Also, any versions I heard on the radio didn't have distorted vocals either, so I'm guessing it's either your stereo or you have been listening to a version I don't know. Hopefully a better person than I can shed more light on this.
