  • I use laundry detergent with a little bleach.
  • I think a mild acid like lemon (citric) or vinegar (acetic) would help, without ruining the material. Warm/Hot water with vinegar, and gently rub.
  • I hate to say this, but nothing beats getting on your kness and doing the scrub brush thing. I once was so disgusted with my floor I got a huge bottle of Fantastik and a toothbrush. And I got out ALL the dirt, even the little grooves around the design on our floor. TOok half the day and the whole bottle, but it was clean!!! After that I never again had a struggle and uses the gentlest of rinses to get it clean. It was worth it.
  • Having spent too much of my military career on my hands and knees, I recommend renting a carpet scrubber (one with the rotating brushes). If you don't want to do that, at least get a set of knee pads from your local hardware store! Also be aware that floor finishes and waxes often entrap dirt in what seems to be a clear impermeable coating. I have found the best thing to strip that stuff off is a stiff solution of ammonia and water.
