  • They do not affect your total point score, but they do effect your overall positive percentage. I do not worry about them either way, as it only happens rarely to me. If I was trolled to the point of a large reduction in overall percentage I may have a whinge though!
  • It was originally used to tell someone their answer was unhelpful.. that went out a LONG time ago. Now it's a button for trolls and childish immature people to hit just because they think everyone should agree with them or because they don't like you or what you stand for. Some will "assume" this: they Drd me so I will DR them..NO WAY can you know who DRd you..it's just an excuse to justify being azz. They need to do away with that button totally
  • Honestly I have no idea...I never pay any attention to them...you can check your profile so that you never see your ratings...
  • To tell people you disagree with their answer or you want to make someone mad.
  • It does affect your score in that it prevents you from accumulating + points by the amount that they deduct. A minor annoyance.
  • You don't have negative points. That is a big misunderstanding. The boxes to the right of questions and answers are not for points but rather for ratings. Positive ratings create points negative ratings don't affect your point total at all. All the points you get you keep. The ratings are merely to show how your question and answer are seen by other members by quality nothing more. When you get a down-rate all points made before on that question and answer are not removed it only appears they have, but in your points total it never decreases. So you might ask why then do we have such a system? that is simple. This site is a question and answer database created by all of us. good answers should rise to the top as most helpful while bad answers will flow to the bottom. That way when others search for an answer they will come across a question and the answers and see how others related to them. Of course this is not always true because the point value can be swayed through other factors, such as popularity and point gaming. Not to mention spite and hate from others for whatever reason.
  • I didn't know that they didn't affect our score
  • To show people that their questions are nonsense or spam/offensive or their answers are not helpful and are considered nonsense or spam/offensive.
  • Points are for your score. They aren't for members. They are to give or take away value to each answer or question. That is why they aren't taken away from our total score. But they will change the ranking of an answer.
