I found one of those plastic dollar store beer steins with water in it that you freeze. Why do the instructions say to freeze it upside down?

A guess: water expands upward when it freezes, there's probably more room for the water to expand at the bottom of the mug than at the top. Expanding water is strong enough to burst many kinds of containers.
