Sounds like your ignition timing needs to be adjusted or the vacuum advance is disconnected on the distributor.

Yodarunner presents some good possibilities but I like to start with the small stuff. Try a higher octane fuel, run a fuel system cleaner additive through the fuel tank, check the spark plugs and check the distributor condition. Those are much easier to do than ignition timing or tracing a vacuum line. Hope this helps, Good luck

Well after turning wrenches for over forty years and owning several RVs I hope I can help out some. One thing I would check and replace would be the ignition coil. I had a similar problem that turned out the coil was weak though it ran fine on the flats. I would use an MSD coil preferably, Summit or an Accel Super coil. New wires would be the next thing to replace if they haven't been replaced in some time. 8-8.5mm MSD or other performance wires sure helps. I use them, the red ones, on my pick up. They have the lowest resistance per foot which allows more spark to your plugs. Some have such high resistance that much of the spark never gets to the plugs. Also your HEI module could be weak. Check the cap for burned marks and corroded contacts. A new fuel filter wouldn't hurt. I think its ignition, at least thats what I would go for first. A plugged fuel system is also possible. Depending on the size of your rig, I would get a smaller engine such as a 400 big block balanced, a bit hard to find, ported and polished with a 600 cfm Edelbrock carb. Good power and better mpgs. Just a suggestion. I wish you well.
