If two identical tones are played such that are exactly in-phase, they will constructively interfere and produce a doubled wave AMPLITUDE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constructive_interference However, our perception of sound is not linear. For sounds to be subjectively about double in volume, the sound wave energy needs increase about tenfold (10 dB). A doubling of sound wave amplitude only produces a sound level change of about 3 dB. Also, it is nearly impossible to generate two identical in-phase sounds. Instead, you are more likely to have them slightly different in frequency or phase. This will produce a beat phenomenon (familiar to people who play/tune musical instruments) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beat_%28acoustics%29
