I don't know about "meant" to be - but it definetly can be very pleasurable for women. Having something just randomly shoved up there is obviously going to hurt, but if you're turned on enough to start with and he takes it relatively gently then it can be a really pleasurable experience, partly because of the knock on stimulating effect on the vagina, and partly because of the thrill of doing something that's a bit taboo. (My friend also swears by it as a cure for period pain though I'm not convinced this actually works!) It's a different sensation to normal sex - it's a bit more intense and obviously tighter and there is a slight edge of pain to it, which some women don't like, but it definetly can be really good.

Most women have had bad experiences with it because it was done incorrectly. It is meant to be pleasurable and is if done correctly. Then again some women like the pain and want it to hurt. Different strokes for different folks.

I have never asked a woman to have anal sex. The women who I have had anal sex with asked me to do it. They taught me to do it slow and with lub and preparation. They certainly appeared to enjoy it. It is not something I do very often, my GF likes it perhaps once a month.
