I heard on a nature show that chimps are smart enough to have a sense of self, what does this mean?

in part it means they know who is looking back at them in a mirror.

This means that they know the diffrence between themselves and the other chimps in a group. They know they're not part of each other. This happens with human babies as the develope. At birth they don't know that they're not part of mom, but as time goes on they realize that even though mom is always there she's not them. And later they come to understand that the baby in the mirror is a reflectionm of them and not another baby that has a mom that looks like theirs.
