That depends upon the level for which you are substituting. EVen elementary school libraries have some great entertainment! Go back and pick up The Twenty-One Balloons. For Middle School sub days, you may want to delve into The Long Walk. At a high school, the world is your oyster! Ask the librarian!

Hey, here's a thought! Why not help the kids? I am sure there are some things that a teacher's attention would fix for some kid.

I know this is 2 months late but....read anything by H.P.Lovecraft. His short stories are intelligently written and the horror you feel is not because of the actual creatures involved, but of the protagonist as he realizes the horror around him and the implications involved in history and of our own human existence. Lovecraft is a master!
