There are probaly many reasons. To me some are: Feeling of superiority, ignorance, selfishness and disregard for others.

Maybe they don't know that to be mean to others is to be mean to yourself.

They're unhappy (somewhere) in their lives, so instead of correcting it, they make someone else miserable. They're not to be pitied, because they know better, so f*ck em, just feel good knowing you're NOT them!

People like treading on other people, they try to outwit you all the time, but are probably only really jelous of you.

Classic psych would lean towards defense mechanism...and I agree. BUT, although I'm not a violent person, I've known some mean people who simply needed a good ass-whipping in public. Maybe that'll fix them..
