It can be very painful to do these exercises even for a few months after the surgery. It is important that he keep the joint mobile, to prevent scar tissue and sweeling from locking up the joint he should keep it moving periodically, but it is also important to follow the messages from your own body. When there is intense pain it is indicative of damage being sustained, a warning to stop the activity to prevent further damage. If pain is preventing him from performing the exercises it may be that he is not ready for them. It is also likely that he does perform the exercises, though possibly in a limited or informal way. Many men naturally seclude themselves when they are in pain, and when embarrased by their deficiencies will not want to show their pain or short-comings, as in this case he may do stretches and movements when noone is around, or when he thinks you're not looking. Some of the stretches can be adequately performed in an impromptu fashion, and it is not even apparent to someone watching. Say he is watching TV, lying on the floor, he might raise his arm over his head and lay there for a few seconds looking comfortable and relaxed, but he is actually stretching the muscles, and is totally aware of it, though you are not. If he is not doing anything it may be that he actually is, but it just doesn't look like it. On the other hand, he may be doing nothing. does he still keep his arm in a sling all day, or does he try to remove it for a while each day?
