  • Something an old co-worker of my mum's (Who was an Iranian refugee) said to me once, "If you don't like your country, it's on your shoulders to make it better" Of course considering that she had fled her own native country that was a rather hypocritical thing for her to say.
  • Evil comes to mind, but thats seems too broad. I am sure there are some fine people in Iran. The violence in the name of religion is very disturbing to me. I would say *Misguided* and *Dangerous* are fitting.
  • Nutters with nuclear bombs.
  • Iran, don't get me started on the middle east. I say no fly zone over it all, nothing in, nothing out, no ships, planes nothing, let them all rot. If they haven't figured it out yet they never will. Flatten it all. Sick of religion.

  • It has been suitably demonised by American politicians because of three main interconnected reasons. One being that the (democratically elected) President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, doesn't like American expansionism and imperialism. This may make him sound a bit mad to some people, but in my opinion it is very understandable - for practically the same reasons why non-Roman states in the Classical period didn't like the Romans. Another reason being that his government has worked hard to nationalise the petroleum in his country, which means no more international American-based corporations. Keep in mind that much of the proceeds are going to help the poor, in the Islamic tradition (and if you think that this is a conspiracy theory, it isn't - the American government seeks to protect American interests, and this includes oil). The final reason, and in my opinion the most justifiable, is the Iranian government's denial of and called-for destruction of Israel, and (possibly, although this is a grey area) Holocaust denial. However, this is really a rather poor reason to single out Iran seeing as most other non-secular Islamic nations espouse almost identical beliefs (you don't see GWB criticising Saudi Arabia or Oman), and US support of Israel is somewhat suspicious in its own right. There are other reaons as well, of course, but they are somewhat minor. It is important that you constantly question what you believe and what is given to you by not only the media but, more importantly, other people you know. Look at the current Iran in the context of the past Persian Empire and ask yourself how it became that it suffered a conservative regressionism in the early eighties and late seventies. And for all of the bad traits Mr Mahmoud may have, he does live in a working-class house in a working-class part of Tehran, and he WALKS to work each day. Compare that with the millionaire American politicians who live in mansions.
