Absolutely not. A serial killer is someone who kills people in three or more events. While most are psychopaths and/or possess a strong personality disorder, they are not all sadistic. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_killers

i would think not. i believe some simply kill with no dis-figurment or mutilation.

No. According to the current thinking in forensics, experts are now classifying serial killers into 4 general categories, based on the killer's motivation. Visionary serial killers have mental illness, and kill because voices tell them to. The 2nd category, mission-killers, believe they need to complete a mission by killing. Neither of these are considered sadistic, at least by motive. The sadistic types of serial killers are the hedonists, who kill for personal gain or sexual arousal, and the control freaks who enjoy torturing and abusing their victims even more than killing them.

No. Many Nazi SS officers hated their job and tried to kill as humanely as they could. They had to kill or they would be killed. What a vicious circle.

I think it from mental illness by far

Generally, I would say no. Most serial killers are Sociopaths (They have Anti Social Personality Disorder) however some of them who may have been severally abused (Abuse at a young age is thought to cause or at least contribute to ASPD) in a sadistic way may in turn "replay" their abuse through their victims. They may do this because as a small child you are helpless, and once they reach an age where they can control others, they want a feeling of power and control. Many of them also abuse/kill animals when they are younger before they start killing humans.
