  • Well the guage on your dash signifies oil pressure. So, if I were you I'd hope that the sensor is stuck. But, this shouldn't happen. Check your oil level every morning. I would recommend that you get the vehicle checked out as soon as possible though, since any engine running with low oil pressure will develop internal problems very quickly. Until it's resolved, keep the revs low (below 3000) and only use the truck when you HAVE to. Make an appt at a shop or ford dealer ASAP and take it in. Also, ask them over the phone for their opinion as to what the problem is. They might say to tow it in (who knows?). Oil is one of those life-bloods of the engine. Don't play down it's signifigance. Hope this helps, Good luck
  • I have the same problem with my 2000 F150 5.4L. After flushing the engine with oil treatments with only temporary success (2-3 days), I searched again on the internet and found the following information: SSM Special Service Message #14907, 99-01 F-150s, •TSB #14907 -- CONCERNS WITH VEHICLES EXHIBITING THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE REGISTERING LOW OR NO OIL PRESSURE USUALLY ON INITIAL START-UP AFTER SEVERAL HOURS OF COLD SOAK. *TT (NHTSA ID #620221, MAY 01 2001) Solution was to replace oil pressure switch with 1U5Z-9278-DA.
  • I have a 2001 F-150 that displays a similar behaviour, but I think it's just electrical. On really cold mornings (below -10C) I always turn the key to Power for a couple of seconds before initiating the engine start. All gauges move up to their normal start positions. When I start the engine, and about the time I let go of the key, all of the gauges drop to zero momentarily and come back up to their normal positions. The gauges on my truck include the tach, speedo, battery, oil, water, fuel. On warmer days, I don't have this problem. I do tend to use the block heater on colder nights, but not always. Use of the block heater has no impact on this behaviour.
  • Common problem if the engine is not noisey is the oil pressure sending unit sticks, located right next to the oil filter, cheap fix, I work for ford, common thing.
  • Had the same problem. Realized that the oil gauge only acted up when the engine was cold and the temp was below freezing. Had water in the oil pressure sending unit that froze when cold and registered 0 oil pressure. Once the ice melted, the pressure read okay.
