I would simply tell them that I do not know them well enough and my husband has strongly urged me never to pick up hitch-hikers. I am sorry, cannot do.

No. Id be like who the hell are you you could be a murderer or a rapist you cant just go around asking people for rides. Id then say i had to pick up loads of people and had no time at the moment, appologise and walk away.

Context is all. This request could be interpreted in various ways, depending who makes it and where, and on my gender and theirs. Nuff said ? Personally, my reply would most likely to be to decline regardless of which they meant. After all "random" and "walked up" rules out a person you might reliably know to be in real trouble of some sort.

I would sorry but I cannot help you, if they were to persist I would say I'm sorry but if you insist on bothering me on the issue I will be forced to call the police and have them arrest you for harassment.
