What organ in the human body is essential for survival, besides the heart?

Heart needs lungs, heart can be exposed to the air so you would need your skin. Everything needs the brain to work as all other organs need something to tell them when to do what. At times in your life you need some of your endocrine system or things just don't work right.

Pretty much all of them. You could live without a spleen, appendix (sp?) and maybe a few other small organs, but for the most part, you need them all. Or else you wouldn't have them.

surely it isn't the brain! the liver is neccessary. if your liver shuts down, you can die from malnutrition. from what i hear, that isn't exactly optimal if life is what you are looking for.
