Depends on your level of mechanical ability. If you can work on your cars yourself, then maintenance costs should be minimal (less than a car payment). If not maintaining an older vehicle can be costly. I have a 1982 Mercedes 300SD and a 1988 Jaguar XJ6 and love working on them. Each cost me on average a couple of hundred of dollars to maintain.
