  • In the 'rime of the ancient mariner', to the sailors, the Albatross represented good luck. For it was thought that the Albatross not only kept storms at bay but could lead a ship to dry land. In the poem, one of the sailors, shots and kills the Albatross therefore bringing bad luck upon the ship. In an effort to contain the bad luck, the other sailor force the avain murderer to wear the dead bird around his neck. This in fact has influenced an expression, " like an albatross around my/his/her neck", meaning a great weight or burden. So, in conclusion, the albatross represented both great hope and luck for the some of the sailors and eternal doom for one in particular.
