The biggest misconception about conservatism is that President Bush is a true conservative in all ways. He differs from conservative ideals in many ways. Read some of the things from the 2000 Republican primary. Why all the negative ratings?

In the United States, I would say the biggest myth about Conservatism is that it exists. OK, that's overstating the case a bit, but true intellectually consistent Conservatism is a minor force in American politics, probably about as influential as the Socialists are on the Left. Instead, was passes for 'Conservatism' in America is an unnatural alliance between Corporatists on economic policy and the Religious Right on social policy. A few Presidential elections ago, one wag noted that the Republican 'dream ticket' was Steve Forbes' economic policies and Pat Buchanan's social policies. Their 'nightmare ticket' would be Pat Buchanan's economic policies and Steve Forbes' social policies. Of course, so-called Liberal Democrats are an amalgam of multiple factions (Republican-lite Corporatists, Pro-choice advocates, environmentalists, inner-city ethnic poor advocates, GLBT spokespeople, etc.), so Liberalism doesn't really exist as a consistent philosophy either.
