  • In my opinion, debate is the thoughtful exchange of information and ideas from two oppossing view points. True debate is using the facts that you have to show the opposing person why you are right and it is done in a respectful intellectual manner. It becomes something else when people begin attacking the opposing viewpoint from a personal standpoint, or just simply state untruths that they know to be untrue but sound like facts. I think the reason there are so few true debates anymore is that our society has become a "Jerry Springer" society that would rather see insults, yelling and screaming, outlandish behavior or even violence than see a thoughtful discussion take place.
  • I wonder why this question is attracting negative points. Is it because it is a stupid question or is it tiuching the raw nerves of irritated debaters?
  • G'day Peterpam, Thank you for your question. It becomes a slanging match when the sides fail to listen to each others points and instead trade insults. It happens presumably because neither side thinks that their points are strong or alternatively lack the debating skills to make a solid argument. Regards
  • From my experience...debate requires a certain amount of level headedness. There are those who look to instigate arguments by throwing cheap remarks into conversation, taunting others. If one sees red,the debate could escalate into a war of words. I work parttime at a pub and have seen two local politicians almost brawling with each other. Normally they would conduct a civilised conversation with each other. i have seen that politics and alcohol don't mix well.
