  • I guess we can't expect one of our Mormon friends to answer that question. There are some that come to mind though when I think about your question. 1. The Book of Abraham was "translated" by Joseph Smith from an Egyptian papyrus that is actually an Egyptian book of the dead and not what Joseph claimed it to be. 2. The hill Cumorah was supposedly the last of the great battles of the Book of Mormon but no relics exist there at all and FARMS (an LDS group) has published that the site contains nothing and that the hill called Cumorah today must not be the same hill Cumorah since they can't find the evidence there. As I posted on another question about the Book of Mormon (in regards to the box where the plates were supposedly found) FARMS had an article called “Archaeology & Cumorah Questions”. In the article recorded in Journal of Book of Mormon Studies, Volume 13, Number 1-2, 2004, page 151, it is reported that "In accord with these general observations about New York and Pennsylvania, we come to our principal object—the Hill Cumorah. Archaeologically speaking, it is a clean hill. No artifacts, no walls, no trenches, no arrowheads. The area immediately surrounding the hill is similarly clean. Pre-Columbian people did not settle or build here. This is not the place of Mormon’s last stand. We must look elsewhere for that hill. The Palmyra hill is still a sacred place and was the repository of the golden plates and other relics placed there by Moroni. How Moroni made his way to this place and constructed his time capsule of artifacts is a historic adventure for another time." 3. The Mormons believe that the American Indians are the descendants of the Lamanites, a group of people who are supposed to be descendants of the tribe of Joseph (one of the 12 tribes of Israel). This claim has been proven false by a Mormon scientist who looked at the DNA of the American Indians and found they had a genetic marker specific to people of Asian decent. That’s enough to get me in trouble but should I think of more I'll add to the list.
  • Read the Four Major Cults by Anthony A. Hoekema....it uses all the mormons documents and the book of moromon to condritict their beliefs!!!
  • Actually, when you ask for beliefs which have been proven to be wrong, you are asking for things that actually do not exist! Sure there are many things which people from all Churches today do not accept and who use their own interpretation of things to prove to themselves our doctrines are false, but that really doesn't prove anything to actually be true or false. For instance, if one's own thinking or pre-conceived notion is flawed from the beginning, how can their end results be accurate? Actually, they can't! Now in defense of those who have thus far answered, let me say there are some problems on our LDS side of the ledger, which must be addressed. 1.We do not, as of yet, know exactly where Lehi and his family landed, when they sailed by boat to the Americas. 2.Many Scholars in the LDS Church, differ as to where things took place in the Book of Mormon. Some say Central America, some, South America, and others say United States. However, new information is coming forth all the time, which is helping to answer these questions. For instance, about the DNA problem? It is true, non-Mormon Scholars in the beginning of DNA research did find that the DNA found in the Native Americans, we call Lamanites, did show them coming from Asia. However, just recently, non-Mormon Scholars have discovered a new strain of DNA which they have identified as Haplogroup x2. And they have also discovered that there are only two areas in the world where this strain of DNA is shared. 1. Europe, primarily, Israel, Belgium, Italy, and a couple of other European countries. 2. Native Americans found only in United States. This particular strain is NOT found anywhere in Asia, nor is it found anywhere in Central or South America! We have also found from Joseph Smith's writings that he indeed knew that United States was actually the Book of Mormon lands. So where are all the bodies from the wars around the hill Cumorah? They apparently have all decayed, except those found in and around Missouri, Ohio, and Illinois and parts of New York. It appears that the people, the Archeologists have identified as "Hopewell Indians" are none other than our Book of Mormon people! And there are literally thousands and thousands of mounds all through those States named above, which contain hundreds and hundreds of men, women and children, which the Scholars say were killed in battle. And the non-Mormon Scholars have recovered thousands of weapons of war, that date to this same time period, as described in the book of Mormon. They, the non-Mormon Scholars, do not call them Book of Mormon people, they only know them as "Mound Builders" or as Hopewell Indians", but they do date them at the same time period, as the Book of Mormon, unknowingly. So don't be too quick to judge prematurely, where the Book of Mormon is concerned. There will be much more evidence yet to come forth. ...Later
  • Completely ignoring opinions and perspectives from outside the LdS Church, here's a list of the once sacred writings and Theologies from past Mormon leaders that the LdS Church has "cast on the ash heap of mere opinion". Again, at the risk of appearing overly didactic, let me reiterate: THESE ARE WITHOUT EXCEPTION "BELIEFS" THAT WERE ONCE CONSIDERED "VALID/CANONICAL" THAT ARE NOW CONSIDERED "NOT VALID/NOT CANONICAL" LDS SACRED WRITINGS: - The 1830 Book of Mormon by Joseph Smith - The Book of Commandments by Joseph Smith - The Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible by Joseph Smith - Lectures on Faith by Joseph Smith - The Journals of Discourse by Various Speakers - The History of the Church by Joseph Smith NON-SACRED WRITINGS THAT HAVE HAD A MAJOR INFLUENCE: - Teachings of The Prophet Joseph Smith - The Seer by Orson Pratt - Mormon Doctrine by Bruce R. McConkie (both editions) - The Miracle of Forgiveness by Stephen Kimball - The Encyclopedia of Mormonism - The Peace Maker by Udney Hay Jacob (pamphlet on Polygamy published by Joseph Smith as a "litmus test" for the acceptance of Polygamy among Latter Day Saints) LDS THEOLOGY AND DOCTRINE: - Adam is Father God of this Planet (aka "Adam-God") - Polgamy during this lifetime as a Requirement for Celestial Exaltation - Priesthood ban on Blacks - Temple Endowment Blood Oaths - Blood Atonement - Word of Wisdom compliance optional - Jehovah as Father - Paid Clergy - Payment for Blessings - 10% "Tithe" of your Estate upon Baptism - Laity use of Seer Stones - Prophecies and Revelations by Laity considered as valid and binding - Gathering in Zion for Second Coming - Building the Far West Temple commanded by God - JST Translation MUST be published by Church for distribution throughout the world - The White Horse Prophesy - etc, etc, etc. (BTW, I compiled this list with a little help with some Ex-Mormons and colleagues - it wasn't done "solo" or in isolation, I had help)
